Cryptocurrency Scam Reporting
Taxonomy Code: FN-1700.1470-170
Programs that provide a hotline, website, or other mechanisms that people can use to report scams in which theft or unauthorized use of cryptocurrency funds occurs. Common scams involve hacking of accounts via phishing links and imposter websites, impersonation of crypto platform customer service or other financial/government institutions, romance scams, bogus investment schemes which may claim endorsements by celebrities, false offers of free crypto coins, fake crypto ATMs, and fraud involving nonreceipt of goods after payment. Recovering lost funds may be difficult due to the unregulated nature of cryptocurrency. Unlike credit cards and debit cards, cryptocurrency is not backed by a government and there is limited legal recourse to dispute a fraudulent transaction. Cryptocurrency payments and transfers can rarely be reversed.
