A disorder that is characterized by use of synthetic versions of controlled substances (such as heroin) that are produced with a slightly altered molecular structure to avoid having them classified as illicit drugs. Designer drugs may put users at risk of serious health problems or death from an overdose, the symptoms of which can include paralysis, stiffening of the joints and other Parkinsonian characteristics rather than the respiratory collapse associated with overdoses of heroin. Designer drugs are less expensive, vastly more potent and more unpredictable and dangerous in their effects than the heroin or other originals they are designed to imitate.
